It’s WINTER TIME!

No Kidding! What a week it has been with the winter storm, delays, and forecasts of more weather on the way.  Please continue to send students to school with appropriate clothes for the weather, and keep your eyes and ears open for news from the school via facebook, email and the TV station websites.  In all cases, remember to put safety first.

On days when we have a delay, it’s important that we reserve space in the morning daycare for families who need the care due to work schedules.  So please do not bring your children early on those days unless your work schedule requires it. Thanks!

----------------The NEXT AR STORE will  be on Wednesday, January 23------------------

News from the Music Department:

As of today, we have only had 2 slips returned for the Talent Show.  If you are planning on participating, Mrs. Stribling needs a note from parents with the student’s name and act by TOMORROW, Friday, January 18th.  Please watch the CLA Facebook page tomorrow for an update on the final decision for the talent show! If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Stribling at astribling@clacademy.org

Also, mark your calendars for Tuesday, April 16 for CLA's Easter program!

From the Principal's Desk

Thank you for the many ways that you each are “family” for others here at CLA.  This includes caring and sharing with one another when there are needs, encouraging, participating in activities, asking questions and answering the questions of others!  As we will soon be moving into the season of registration and enrollment for next school year, these are all positive aspects of being a CLA family that you can share with others.  If you know of a family looking at or considering a CLA education, please encourage them to visit! In just a few short weeks you will see information coming out about the 2019-2020 school year.  Wow, time sure does move quickly!

In Christ,

It’s WINTER TIME!

As it appears we have some snow headed our way, this is a reminder abou thow we handle the weather...

  • Outdoor Recess - we have outdoor recess as often as possible, but will keep students inside if wind chill is too cold.  Please DO send students with hats, coats, gloves relative to the projected temperature for the day.

  • Snow play at Recess - students will only be allowed to play in the snow if they have snow boots and gloves (of course, jackets and hoods/hats, too).  We have outdoor hard surfaces free of snow, so all students do go outside, but they are restricted if they do not have snow gear.

  • WEATHER CLOSINGS OR DELAYS - We will close school only if the majority of the districts where our students reside are also closed.  In general, that means Olympia, Tremont, Delavan and/or DeeMack. If CLA is open, but your local district is closed, we ask you to make a safe decision about coming to school.

  • CHRISTIAN LIFE ACADEMY CLOSING ANNOUNCMENTS are online at centralillinoisproud.com and displayed on WMBD/WYZZ TV.  We also post on the CLA facebook page and send out an email. In general, an announcement will be made by 7 am.

----------------The NEXT AR STORE will  be on Wednesday, January 23------------------

News from the Music Department:

Do you have a hidden longing to recreate scenes from your favorite musical?  Do you suddenly burst forth into song at lunch? Practice magic in your spare time? We have a big opportunity for you! It's time for CLA's annual Talent Show/ Chili cook off on Friday, February 1st.

Students who are interested demonstrating their unique talents will need to turn in a signed permission slip by Friday, January 19th.  We need a minimum of 10 acts signed up by Wednesday, January 16th!    Vocal acts will need to provide their own karaoke track for accompaniment if desired- you will not be able to sing with a cd/mp3 featuring the artist's rendition.  Please make sure to check next week’s Lion Tales to see if we have enough acts!  If we have enough acts, auditions will be held the week of January 21st.

Chili cook-off: Entrants will need to provide chili or a dessert for 12-15 people.

For more information, please see the attached letter. If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Stribling at astribling@clacademy.org

Also, mark your calendars for Tuesday, April 16 for CLA's Easter program!

Volunteer help needed!

As most people know, volunteers are crucial to the operation at CLA.  There are currently two areas where this volunteer help is most evident - the lunch room and the office.  We have many dedicated volunteers, but currently have a couple of specific needs:

  • Office volunteer needed for Mondays - these could be full days or half days.  Lori Horning lhorning@clacademy.org is the contact for this, or call the school office 449-3346.

  • Substitutes for volunteers are also important.  Those who are unable to commit to a regular weekly spot could be available to fill in.  Contact Mrs. Lawson (for kitchen volunteers) blawson@clacademy.org or Mrs. Horning (office) to become a sub!

From the Principal's Desk

As we prepare to take some “time away” I pray that we all remember the blessings that we have as a Christian Life Academy community.  The Lord has blessed us with so many families, students, and staff who lead by their example, who pray daily for what happens at school, who support one another and encourage one another.  Thank you , CLA family, for the part you play in God’s ministry here. Blessings to you as we celebrate Christmas!

In Christ,

Celebrating Christ’s birth together… another reason why I love our school!

It is with a grateful heart that I say “THANK YOU” to our students and teachers for the wonderful celebration of Christmas that we shared together last night.  As I sat and watched students share music and drama, then joined together with the CLA community singing “O Come All Ye Faithful,” I was filled with joy. I considered how different many schools “Holiday Programs” are when the focus cannot be on Jesus Christ, and was thankful that our celebration was in worship to our Lord.  This is one of multiple times each year that I am eternally thankful for the possibility of a school whose mission is to work side-by-side with families and the church to see Christian growth in our students. Praise the Lord!

December is a time where many consider the opportunities to give.  This week we will be sending out our annual letter requesting support for the ministry of Christian Life Academy.  We pray that many find a place in their heart and a spot in their budget to help CLA thrive. If you know of someone who may want to give, please let me know!

WEATHER….Check Facebook and check TV Stations (WEEK)

If there is a school delay or closing, CLA will generally follow the Olympia school district’s decision.  As happened on Monday, if a large number of other districts where our families reside are closed, we may do the same.  We will post a message on facebook and also be listed on TV stations, so please check these sources before leaving for school!

From the Principal's Desk

I just wanted to take the time to encourage everyone… God is at work every day!  We can see His hand here at school every day. We see students who show God’s love to one another.  We see families who put Jesus first in their lives. What a wonderful blessing! Keep following HIM!

I was impacted recently by some words from Psalm 119:151: “Yet you are near, O Lord, and all your commands are true.”  Sometimes we feel like the problems or struggles of our day are the closest thing on our minds. But remember, our Lord is BIGGER, and He’s near to us as well!  May you be encouraged when you remember the love of God for you today… no matter what else is near and on your mind!

We are beginning a Monday morning chapel series on the fruit of the Spirit, from Galatians 5:22. This week our focus was on LOVE.  I’ve been challenged recently in several different Bible studies and groups I am a part of to truly understand what it means to LOVE one another… and to live out the Holy Spirit’s directives for my life.  I hope that is our sincere desire - as we direct our children as well - to LOVE as Jesus first loved us!

THANK YOU! LIFE DAYS WAS A GREAT SUCCESS!

The actual numbers take a bit of time to finalize, but we can surely say that Life Days 2018 was a great success raising funds for our school.  It appears that the final tally will fall in the range of $48-50,000, which is right in line with the budgeted amount and the goal that was set.  It took dozens of volunteers and hundreds of attendees, and again we say “Thank You” to all who contributed in so many ways.

REMINDER… It’s getting colder outside!

From the Principal's Desk

As the first quarter of the school year was completed last week, that means report cards are coming… A regular check on the progress we are making is important.  We can see areas of excellence, and areas to improve. Parent-teacher conferences are coming up next week. I always look forward to the opportunity for parents and teachers to sit down together and seek what is best for each child.  I think it’s a great example of collaboration together! We are happy to share in the education of your children!

REMINDERS: SAFETY DURING THE DROP-OFF and PICK-UP TIMES . . .

It is very important that we consider SAFETY FIRST during the drop-off times in the morning and the pick-up times in the afternoon.  We have noticed a few things that we can improve upon so as to avoid the chance of an incident:

●       At drop-off times, remember that students should WALK ON THE SIDEWALKS when they get out of the car.  So whether they get out of the car near the front or the back of the line, it’s important that they walk directly to the sidewalk, then to the doors.

●       DRIVERS, PLEASE BE PATIENT.  Some students take longer than others to get in or out of cars.  Our dismissal takes less than 7 minutes most days… so please wait the extra minute for the cars in front of you to unload/load - do not pull around them.  Safety first!

●       PLEASE PULL FORWARD whenever possible, but PLEASE AVOID PASSING CARS IN FRONT OF YOU in both drop-off and pick-up lines.  The one exception is if a car pulls all the way forward to the end of the sidewalk to wait for a student.  The extra time waiting for the cars in front to exit can save a fender-scrape or worse yet a dangerous situation for a child.

●       REMINDER… Drivers should not get out of the cars during drop-off or pick-up time.  If you need to exit your car, please park in the gravel lot or in a marked space…. not in the drop-off or pick-up lane.

From the Principal's Desk

Thank you, families, for your partnership with Christian Life Academy! Each year at this time, I begin to have a feeling of being overwhelmed… with busy-ness during this season of Life Days, but also overwhelmed with gratitute toward the many people who give countless hours of their time for the benefit of our school.  It’s a joy to see so many people involved! When we join together in support of something like this, mighty things can be done.  And we then remember to give God the glory!  Looking forward to our big event in just over two weeks!

In Christ,

CLA Family, it’s important that you know how vital philanthropy and fundraising is for Christian Life Academy. Did you know that the tuition paid by families covers only 60-65% of the costs associated with operating our school? I bring this to your attention because we are entering a vital time for raising funds for the school. Life Days, our signature event, is just around the corner. It’s easy to just push it aside and say “someone else will do it” when asked to donate, or volunteer, or attend this event. (Hi! - If you have read this far through Lion Tales, I want to say “thanks!” So, the first person to text me the words “Life Days” to 309-267-8781 wins a candy bar -  Mr. Horning) Please, I encourage you, jump in with both feet into this event, and into every part of the CLA Community!  In the past, Life Days (donations, auction, activities) has raised over 10% of our budget in most years. That means about $50,000 for this year’s budget. To keep CLA thriving and growing, we need EVERYONE to take part in LIFE DAYS… So I ask you…  please  get involved!

Several times each week, our teachers gather for a brief time of prayer.  During this time, we pray for individual needs of our students and staff, for God’s direction for the day in our classrooms, and simply ask the Lord to bless what happens in the school.  I’d ask you as a family to do the same - would you regularly pray for the school, students, families, teachers?  We know that prayer is a mighty weapon, and communication with our Lord is vital to our lives.  Thanks again for sharing in this family at CLA!

Reminders . . .

Please make sure students have TENNIS SHOES for Physical Education! PE schedules vary by grade level.  Students may choose to leave a pair at school (in locker/cubby).

Drop-off and Pick-up . . .

NOTE:  Please be sure to enter on the SOUTH drive (closest to the medical complex doctor offices) when you come for drop-off and pick-up each day. Follow the curve, pull up as far as you are able (not past the 4-square painted on the drive).  Be safe and drive slowly when in the school lot and drive way!  PLEASE DO NOT GET OUT OF YOUR CAR AND COME INTO THE SCHOOL WHILE IN THE DROP-OFF LINE…. if you need to come in the building, please park in a marked space.

At Pick-up time, please make sure you have your yellow “authorized” car sign visible for staff to identify your car so that your children can be safely picked up!  Two new signs for you to fill out were sent home last week.  PLEASE DO NOT GET OUT OF YOUR CAR AND WALK UP TO THE DOORS…. This slows down the line!  Thanks!

Student/Parent Handbooks and Health documents for students . . .

If you did not get one at back-to-school night or on the first day of school, please check with the school office.  Please read the handbook, sign and return the last page.

If your child is due for immunizations, dental, eye, or physical exams, please make sure the documents are turned in to the school office by the end of August.  If you have appointments scheduled after August 31, please send a note to the school office letting Mrs. Horning know of this appointment.

Email reminders will be sent to those who have not taken care of handbook and health documents…

Volunteers needed - for regular weekly shifts . . .

We appreciate parents helping in many ways.  Here are several specifics for this fall:

  • Office Volunteers have a regular ½ day or full day shift and are responsible for answering phones and doing miscellaneous tasks to assist Mr. Horning, Mrs. Horning, and the other staff.  A few regular shifts as well as fill-in/substitutes are needed.
  • Recess Monitors for various recess times are helpful to assist staff who operate these recesses.

If you are able to commit to a regular volunteer opportunity, please contact the office!!!

Before School Care Reminder . . .

We are glad to offer before school care to our families who are in need of this service.  Day care opens at 7:30 am.  It appears that we may have a large number of students needing this, so please remember this is specifically for those needing the service due to parent work responsibilities. We know it is fun to come and play before school starts, but we are only able to accommodate 20 or less students.   If you are able to use the regular 8:15-8:30 drop off time, please do so!

From the Principal's Desk . . .

One week under our belts!  My hope and prayer is that your family is getting into the routine of the school year once again.  Don’t forget in your routine to regularly thank God for the opportunity that we have to partner together in the education of our children.  What a blessing it is to be able to daily share Jesus with each one.  It’s a blessing that not all children and families have.  Thank you for allowing your children this opportunity!

FROM THE SCHOOL OFFICE - Lunch Money, Office Mail, and more details . . .

Any items that eventually are handled by the school office (lunch money, tuition payments, notes, etc.) should be sent with your children in their backpack/folder in the morning. This is the most efficient way to get items to the school office, as each class sends items to the office every day. Please be sure envelopes are CLEARLY labeled so that they will get to the correct location. If you would prefer to deliver it yourself, please place items, clearly marked, in the tray on the corner of the secretary's desk.  Lunch menus were available at registration and back to school night, but if you need August and September menus, please contact the office and we can send them home.  Lunch menus are also online at www.clacademy.org.

  • Student/Parent Handbooks . . .

If you did not get one at back-to-school night or on the first day of school, please check with the school office.  Please read the handbook, sign and return the last page.

  • Volunteers needed - for regular weekly shifts

We appreciate parents helping in many ways.  Here are several specifics for this fall:

Office Volunteers have a regular ½ day or full day shift and are responsible for answering phones and doing miscellaneous tasks to assist Mr. Horning, Mrs. Horning, and the other staff.  A few regular shifts as well as fill-in/substitutes are needed.

Lunchroom Volunteers help to prepare and serve lunch as well as clean-up after lunch. We currently have regular helpers on all days needed, but would gladly encourage more help or individuals willing to fill in.

Recess Monitors for various recess times are helpful to assist staff who operate these recesses.

If you are able to commit to a regular volunteer opportunity, please contact the office!!!

Before and After School Care Reminders!

After school care is an opportunity we offer for our enrolled families, but we must also be careful on the numbers of students that are in daycare.  Please read the following information carefully!  If you have questions, please talk with Mr. Horning.

  • From 3:30 to 4:00 after school care is at no charge, but students MUST be enrolled ahead of time. This means that we must have a prior schedule for each day that the student will be coming to daycare. We are NOT having a simple “drop in” list, so please be sure that if your child needs to stay in aftercare, that the school is informed ahead of time!
  • Any student who needs to utilize daycare without being on the enrollment list for that particular day, there will be a $3 charge.  A phone call or note to enroll the student for that day MUST be done BY NOON to avoid this charge.
  • Students who remain at daycare after 4:00 will have the following fee schedule:

Pickup prior to 4:30, $2 per child.

Pickup after 4:30, $7 per child.

Daycare closes at 5:30.

From the Principal's Desk . . .

Welcome!  To start the school year, we will be focusing on passages from Psalms.  Our first two are from Psalm 1 and Psalm 62.  We are like a TREE (Psalm 1:1-3), and God is our ROCK (Psalm 62:1-2).  We sang about how we will never be shaken when God is our fortress. It is my hope that our foundation gets stronger and stronger as we go through this year.  I am hopeful that together this year we will impact each of our students for the Kingdom.  May this be a wonderful year!

In Christ,
