CLA has been blessed with a tremendous amount of growth in recent years. We currently have two opportunities available where we can use some extra special people!

1. We are in need of some individuals with education (either homeschool or public school) experience/background to help tutor our students.

2. We are also looking to form partnerships with local businesses and business owners to initiate an internship program for our high school students. Participants would need to be willing to help us craft this program, identify skills that our graduates would need in today's workforce, and develop an apprentice relationship with high school students.

If either of these opportunities speak to you, please contact Amanda Stribling at astribling@clacademy.org for more details!

Recorder Challenge!

Mrs. Stribling will be going to Kenya this summer, and she needs YOUR help with the Recorders without Borders Challenge!  Your mission, should you choose to accept it: pick up your recorder, come up with a great costume or props, and record yourself playing a short song!  Once you're done, post your video to the CLA facebook page with the following tags- @RecordersWithoutBorders, #musicconnectsus, #ChristianLifeAcademy, and #WSSRecorderChallenge.   After your vivacious video of musical mastery goes viral, consider either donating your recorder OR donating $4.50 (plus a few dollars extra for shipping) to purchase a recorder to send to Kenya with Mrs. Stribling for the students at the schools in Nairobi!  Flyers were sent home last week with more details.  If you have any questions, or would be willing to committing to praying for Mrs. Stribling's trip this summer, please contact her at astribling@clacademy.org.

Final AR Store - Wednesday, May 2 . . .

We welcome donations for prizes that can be purchased at the Accelerated Reader Store.  Please send in any donations in the next two weeks so the store can be set up for our students to shop!  Thanks!

From the Principal's Desk . . .

Just a quick note:  “THANK YOU” for everyone’s part in the CLA Community.  We are blessed!

Finally, some warm weather!  I heard a comment during morning recess today: “Why is it SO WARM outside??!!”  I guess temperatures in the 70s are so distant in the past that students just didn’t remember them!  But any thoughts about the weather always remind me that He who holds the weather has it all in His hands!  Praise the Lord for rain, sun, snow, warm, cold, cloudy…. and most of all for the LIFE that He breathes into us daily!

We are into the “home stretch” of this school year.  I shared with the school body in chapel on Tuesday from Galatians 6:9-10.  We are reminded that we are not supposed to grow weary, or get tired, of doing good.  We are promised that in the end, we will reap a harvest (at the proper time that God has set up) if we don’t give up.  I hope that all of us - students, staff, and parents, remember to finish the year strong.  It’s been a great year, so far, and I am confident that we CAN reap the harvest that God intends for us. DON’T GIVE UP!  Finish the race of this school year STRONG!

Wthout the amazing support of SO MANY people, a school like Christian Life Academy would not exist. I know that I will miss many people, but did you know the countless hours that so many individuals put into the school? Below you will see just a FEW examples of the ways that people give so generously of their time! None of the individuals below are employes of the school (which may be a surprise to some) but they are so invested that people see them here helping all the time! A BIG THANK YOU! I encourage you all, readers, to express your thanks to those who give, and give, and give!

In Christ,

Mr. Horning

THANK YOU! EACH OF YOU IS PRICELESS!

Melanie Hasty - many hours in the library and office areas, kitchen and more

Darren Barnes - many years of  design and building of the program stages

Julie Connett, Leann Rocke, Michele Gesell  - cooking and serving in the kitchen

Eric Rocke - electrical work in the kitchen

Darren and Tamra Barnes - organization and supplies for the concession stands for sports teams

And so many more… school board members, coaches, office volunteers, the list never ends!

From the Principal's Desk . . .

I had the opportunity to get a glimpse of middle school and high school Bible several times in the last couple of weeks, and again became excited about the opportunity that we have here, at Christian Life Academy, to prepare students to be faithful  disciplemakers.  We learned about the Hebrew word “haver” (ha-vaiR) which defines friendship as  “grappling together in twos and threes over the application of scripture.”  It is our hope that at CLA we can help students learn to be friends like this!                                                                                                                                       In

News from the Music Department:

Mark Thursday, March 22 on your calendars! CLA students will be performing the musical Danny and the Shacks! for our annual Easter program. Danny and the Shacks embark on a thrill-ride of experiences as they encounter King Neb, his golden statue, some crazy Babylonians, the fiery furnace, and the infamous lions den. Through it all, the powerful truth of God's Word and the importance of being obedient and faithful to His teaching comes through loud and clear!

This year, students with non-character roles are asked to wear school-appropriate workout gear to the program!  We are also looking for the following props:

water bottles                 trophy                          a toy (or real!) saxophone

We are also looking for individuals to help with the construction of some barbells, weights, and kettlebells created out of foam/cardboard, and to create a mini obstacle course!  If you are interested in helping out, please contact Mrs. Stribling as soon as possible.

Demo copies of Danny and the Shacks! are available to purchase for $6 each.  You can order and download them straight from the Word Music website or have your child bring $6 into Mrs. Stribling and she will download them onto a cd for you.

From the Principal's Desk . . .

Parents, we are well on our way for preparing for next year.  During tomorrow’s teacher in-servce, we will be looking toward the future in many ways.  I ask that you pray earnestly that CLA would always seek the Lord and His plans as each new year dawns.  And of course, pray for His guidance as we finish the final quarter of this 2017-18 school year!

Among other great things that I experience as principal at CLA, conversations with parents are one of the best.  Of course, sometimes there are tough issues to discuss and fgure out.  But so many times we realize that TOGETHER - school and famly - we can have an amazing impact on students and, in turn, on the world.  As we continue discipleship together, I cherish the opportunties we have to partner in this way!

Reminders about how we handle cold and weather at CLA:

  • Outdoor Recess - we have outdoor recess as often as possible, but will keep students inside if wind chill is too cold.  Please DO send students with hats, coats, gloves relative to the projected temperature for the day.
  • Snow play at Recess - students will only be allowed to play in the snow if they have snow boots and gloves (of course, jackets and hoods/hats, too).  We have outdoor hard surfaces free of snow, so all students do go outside, but they are restricted if they do not have snow gear.

  • CHRISTIAN LIFE ACADEMY CLOSING ANNOUNCMENTS are online at centralillinoisproud.com and displayed on WMBD/WYZZ TV.  We also post on the CLA facebook page and send out a text to all who are a part of the REMIND app.   In general, an announcement will be made by 7 am.

  1. Please make sure that all K-10 students return the slip about the MYSTERY MEAL on Thursday, February 15th!  Student council is treating all students to a FREE meal that day, but wants to have all students RETURN THE PERMISSION SLIP which explains the foods being served!
  2. On FRIDAY, MONDAY and TUESDAY, students can purchase SMALENTINES - scented pencils - to give to friends for Valentine’s Day.  They cost $1 per pencil and proceeds will benefit Student Council activities.  No reservations for pencils will be accepted without payment, so bring $$!

From the Principal's Desk . . .

The message of “Danny and The Shacks” reminds me that we are all called to stand for Christ in all that we do… And being a fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, I was so impressed to see many of their players standing for Christ in this recent Super Bowl run.  What a platform for them to use for the glory of the Lord!  May we all be so courageous in our individual platforms - to share Jesus and make disciples!

It’s WINTER TIME!

We were fortunate prior to Christmas break to enjoy relatively easy weather to deal with.  But now in the past 10 days we have ranged from well below freezing to upper 50s, with everything from rain, to snow, ice and sleet.  Here are a few items related to weather you may want know:

  • Outdoor Recess - we have outdoor recess as often as possible, but will keep students inside if wind chill is too cold.  Please DO send students with hats, coats, gloves relative to the projected temperature for the day.

Saturday, February 3rd, the CLA Band students will be having their annual Solo/Ensemble Event.  This will begin at 9:00 am in the music room.

From the Principal's Desk . . .

This week, on a personal note, a pretty significant thing happened.  Our 8th grade basketball players, including my son Landon, and his friends Matt Lawson, Micah Waggoner and Jack Litwiller, are playing their last game together as CLA Lions.  As I thought about it, I considered how things have changed since the time six years ago when, as 3rd graders, Matt and Landon played in their first game together for the school.  These 8 yr olds played alongside and against junior high boys, in about 10 games that year.  This year, every game they played was solely as 7th/8th graders against other 7th/8th grade teams.  They played  over 20 games.  This is a shift in program… amazing growth.  The same things are happening at CLA in our middle school and now high school.  I thank the Lord for His guidance, for opening and closing the correct doors, for the vision He has shown us.  May we always follow His lead!

  • Snow play at Recess - students will only be allowed to play in the snow if they have snow boots and gloves (of course, jackets and hoods/hats, too).  We have outdoor hard surfaces free of snow, so all students do go outside, but they are restricted if they do not have snow gear.
  • WEATHER CLOSINGS OR DELAYS - We will close school only if the majority of the districts where our students reside are also closed.  In general, that means Olympia, Tremont, Delavan and/or DeeMack.  If CLA is open, but your local district is closed, we ask you to make a safe decision about coming to school.

The talent show/chili cook off is a GO for Friday, February 2nd!  We are still in need of people to make some chili and desserts.  Any student who is still interested in participating in the talent show needs to let Mrs. Stribling know ASAP!

**Please contact Mrs. Stribling at astribling@clacademy.org to make chili/dessert or set up an audition time!

At the end of January each year, I begin to see excitement build for the upcoming school year.  The same is true once again this year, as we get ready to think about the 2018-2019 school year, the expansion of High School, and all the excitement surrounding the thoughts about a new school year. I encourage each person in our community to join me in prayer for what’s to come.  I know God has it in HIS hands!

In chapels recently, we have been reading from Psalms - 63, 100 and 117.  The common theme:  Praise the Lord!  Sometimes we forget to give glory and honor to the Lord… He is worthy of all our praise!  I hope that you are praising the Lord today (and every day!)

Part of my role as administrator at CLA is to write and send out an annual “plea” to supporters of our school.  As we worked on this the past two weeks - and you likely saw or will see the letter - I was continually reminded of how God has provided.  Through hundreds of donors, volunteers, and friends, God has allowed CLA to survive - and thrive - for a decade.  I’d encourage you to consider being a part of this cloud of witnesses this year.  Blessings to all!

KEEP BRINGING IN THOSE BOX TOPS!!!

Currently the K-2 Team is in the lead for Box-Topoly.  They have submitted 300 Box Tops to this point and have the lead on the game board!

From the Principal's Desk . . .

We had a wonderful visit this past Monday from Pastor Kevin Sauder from New Castle Bible Church. Pastor Kevin closed our chapel series about the attributes of God and how God’s grace is a free gift for us. Our focus for this set of chapels was Ephesians 2:8, and Pastor Kevin brought it “home” by explaining to us the difference between a thorn bush and a fruit tree.  The thorn bush, which doesn’t produce fruit, represents our selfish ambition. The fruit tree has God’s purpose, and the fruit of the Spirit is evident. We are thankful for individuals like Kevin who give of their time in this community for the common purpose of speaking truth into the lives of the students at CLA. Pastor Kevin reminded us that the tree that CLA has on its logo can help us remember his message.

May we all live our lives in such a way that God is glorified, and His plan is fulfilled through us!

Notes from the Music department . . .

Information will be coming home today regarding tickets for our annual Christmas program and dinner.  Please note: the program itself is free to attend and the doors will open at 6:30 for seating.  Tickets for the dinner will be $8 per person, and the gym doors will open for seating at 5:30pm with dinner service starting at 5:45.  Please see the attached letter for more information!

K-4 students who do not wear costumes are asked to wear dress clothes- no jeans, t-shirts with writing or graphics, or flip flops. Some 3rd and 4th grade students will have costumes- please check with your child next week to see if they have a costume!

5-10th grade students will need to wear all black to serve the Christmas dinner. No jeans, no shirts with graphics or writing, and comfortable black shoes.  School dress code rules still apply, so please do not wear tight fitting clothing.  You will be asked to change.

We are in need of some prop items for the Christmas program.  If you have any of these items we can borrow for the week of the performance, please contact Mrs. Stribling!

  • a twin size bed
  • a stand up privacy screen
  • a tall desk or bistro table and stool
  • plaid lap blankets
  • knitted shawls (think grandma style knitted shawls)

From the Principal's Desk . . .

This has been quite an exciting year already… but as always, I am looking forward to celebrating the Christmas season with our school. Seeing the information about the Christmas program reminds me of the great opportunity we have to share Christ’s love and celebrate His birth. Only 7 weeks til Christmas!

In Christ,

Mr. Horning
