THE FIRST AR (Accelerated Reader) STORE is Next Week - WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25!

All the students who have been reading have earned points through the end of September, and will use those points to make purchases at the AR store.

From the Principal's Desk . . .

In last week’s Lion Tales, I ended by saying “What a mighty God we serve…” and how true that statement turned out to be!  It’s not that I doubted the might of our God, but sometimes we need reminders.  God showed His might last week during Life Days: From the Friday afternoon prayer of blessing and strength by students, to the Friday night fun, through the parting of the rain clouds for the obstacle race, God was working.  Breakfast was delicious on Saturday morning, the concert was a worshipful, blessed time, and the pork chop dinner was tasty.  But God’s might was truly evident in the “bidding activity” Saturday night as well!  We are so grateful for the support of so many - friends, families, and those who are simply acquaintances of the school.  Life Days 2017, our 10th anniversary year, out-shined every past Life Days by over $10,000.  Wow!  Thank you, Lord, for sustaining us and showing your might!

From the Principal's Desk

It sure has been an exciting week so far.  Grandparents’ Day today, and Life Days, celebrating 10 years at Christian Life Academy, is this weekend.  In all the hustle and bustle, it is simply refreshing to know that God is truly in control.  He gives us peace in what sometimes feels like a storm.  Psalm 23 reminds us, that the Lord is our shepherd.  He guides us, protects us, brings us to the place of refreshment that we need.  What a mighty God we serve!

THE FIRST AR STORE WILL BE ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25!

From the Principal's Desk . . .

I was reminded recently through conversations with some great Christian friends… PRAYER is such an important thing, which we often take too lightly.  Imagine the amazing things that God has in store for your family… your community… our school.  He desires for us to talk with Him, listen to Him, pray unceasingly for the plans that HE has for us!

From the Principal's Desk . . .

This week I had the opportunity to substitute in several classes, including Bible classes with our middle school and high school students.  In the course of these classes, we were discussing the concept of loving others so much that you care less about yourself… a perfect example is our Savior, who “made Himself nothing” when he became human to live on the earth, and ultimately paid the price for the sin of us all!.  Let’s be more like Jesus every day, as we care for others more than ourselves.

Several different times this past week, I’ve had the pleasure of sitting down and talking with a parent about a concern, a joy, or something to pray about.  For each situation, I wanted to share just a brief reminder:  God is BIGGER, and he is ABLE to help… Trust Him!!!

Wow - just one month from now we will be CELEBRATING together at LIFE DAYS 2017.  For those of you who are not familiar with it, Life Days is a wonderful and FUN time together.  It’s also our signature event… I still recall, 10 years ago, when we decided “let’s have a little fundraising event to celebrate what’s happening at our school!”  At the time, we had 27 students, 4 teachers, and a lot of dreams.  Now, 10 years later, over 125 students, 13 staff members, countless volunteers, and we are still celebrating what God is doing in so many lives.  I am looking forward to seeing you at Life Days on Oct 13 and 14!

With the changing of the seasons - yes, I know there will probably be some hot, humid days before the season really changes completely - we are reminded of how God holds all things in His mighty hand.  I am grateful that we serve such an awesome God.  How good it is to know that He who holds all things in His hands, also cares for each of us!

At Pick-up time, please be patient with the cars in front of yours, and make sure that you pull all the way forward. We understand that some cars take longer than others to load (smaller kids, car seats, etc.).  But it is more safe to wait an extra minute or so than to pull out of line and go around the car that is still loading.  Thanks! Please pass this message on to all others (grandparents, friends) who pick up your children.  Also please make sure you have your yellow “authorized” car sign visible for staff to identify your car so that your children can be safely picked up!

Amazingly, we’ve now completed two full weeks of school.  It’s been a great start.  I have enjoyed my “new role” of spending lunchtime in the cafeteria most days.  Opening milk containers, eating lunch with the kids, even helping to clean up spilled yogurt or a messy tray… The community of Christian Life Academy is such a wonderful one. Again, as I’ve said before, thanks for sharing your children with us. We are glad to join together with families to raise young people who will serve the Lord their entire life!

Please make sure students have TENNIS SHOES for Physical Education! PE schedules vary by grade level.  Students may choose to leave a pair at school (in locker/cubby).

Drop-off and Pick-up Reminder . . .

  • Please be sure to enter on the SOUTH drive (closest to the medical complex doctor offices) when you come for drop-off and pick-up each day. This is a reversal from previous years, in order to give more off-street space for cars to arrive and depart safely.  AT BOTH DROP OFF AND PICK UP TIMES, PLEASE PULL FORWARD AS FAR AS POSSIBLE.  This allows more cars to load/unload at the same time.  Thanks!
  • At Pick-up time, please make sure you have your yellow “authorized” car sign visible for staff to identify your car so that your children can be safely picked up!

From the Principal's Desk . . .

It has been great fun getting to know all of our students as the school year has begun.  Each one is unique, and with many God-given talents and abilities.  It is a pleasure for us to work with them throughout the year.  We do encourage you all to keep the school, students, staff and families in prayer throughout the school year.  Our staff gathers each Monday, Wednesday and Friday for prayer at 7:55.  If any families are interested in praying together on a certain morning or afternoon, we’d be glad to help arrange such a time (and I’ll join in!)

Life Days 2017 will be held Friday, October 13 and Saturday, October 14.  We ask ALL CLA families to participate in our Largest Event each year!!!

Reminders . . .

  • PE SHOES: Please make sure students have TENNIS SHOES for Physical Education! PE schedules vary by grade level.  Students may choose to leave a pair at school (in locker/cubby).
  • Drop-off and Pick-up:
Please be sure to enter on the SOUTH drive (closest to the medical complex doctor offices) when you come for drop-off and pick-up each day. This is a reversal from previous years, in order to give more off-street space for cars to arrive and depart safely.

At Pick-up time, please make sure you have your yellow “authorized” car sign visible for staff to identify your car so that your children can be safely picked up!

FROM THE SCHOOL OFFICE
Lunch Money, Office Mail, and more details . . .

  • Any items that eventually are handled by the school office (lunch money, tuition payments, notes, etc.) should be sent with your children in their backpack/folder in the morning. This is the most efficient way to get items to the school office, as each class sends items to the office every day.
  • Please be sure envelopes are CLEARLY labeled so that they will get to the correct location.
  • If you would prefer to deliver it yourself, please place items, clearly marked, in the tray on the corner of the secretary's desk.
  • Lunch menus were sent home in July, and available at registration, and on our website, but if you need August and September menus, please contact the office and we can send them home.

Student/Parent Handbooks . . .

If you did not get one at back-to-school night or on the first day of school, please check with the school office.  Please read the handbook, sign and return the last page

Volunteers needed - for regular weekly shifts . . .

We appreciate parents helping in many ways. Here are several specifics for this fall:

  1. Office Volunteers have a regular half-day or full-day shift and are responsible for answering phones and doing miscellaneous tasks to assist Mr. Horning, Mrs. Horning, and the other staff. A few regular shifts as well as fill-in/substitutes are needed.
  2. Lunchroom Volunteers help prepare and serve lunch as well as clean-up after lunch. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays are days when help is needed. We have at least one volunteer scheduled for these days, but a second helper is always helpful! We would welcome a Tues/Thurs helper, too, if that fits your schedule.
  3. Recess Monitors for various recess times are helpful to assist staff who operate these recesses.

If you are able to commit to a regular volunteer opportunity, please contact the office!!!

Before and After School Care . . . Reminders!

  • We are glad to offer before school care to our families who are in need of this service. Day care opens at 7:30 am. It appears that we may have a large number of students needing this, so please remember this is specifically for those needing the service due to parent work responsibilities. We know it is fun to come and play before school starts, but we are only able to accommodate 20 or less students. If you are able to use the regular 8:15-8:30 drop off time, please do so!
  • After school care is an opportunity we offer for our enrolled families, but we must also be careful on the numbers of students that are in daycare.  Please read the following information carefully!  If you have questions, please talk with Mr. Horning.
  • From 3:30 to 4:00 after school care is at no charge, but students MUST be enrolled ahead of time. This means that we must have a prior schedule for each day that the student will be coming to daycare. We are NOT having a simple “drop in” list, so please be sure that if your child needs to stay in aftercare, that the school is informed ahead of time!
  • Any student who needs to utilize daycare without being on the enrollment list for that particular day, there will be a $3 charge. A phone call or note to enroll the student for that day MUST be done BY NOON to avoid this charge.
  • Students who remain at daycare after 4:00 will have the following fee schedule:
    • Pickup prior to 4:30, $2 per child.
    • Pickup after 4:30, $7 per child.
    • Daycare closes at 5:30.

From the Principal's Desk . . .

Welcome!  To start the school year, we will be focusing on Romans chapter 12, which has many wonderful nuggets for us to learn from.  In verses 1-2, which we used in chapel this morning, we learn that we need to listen to the correct voice (God’s) so that we don’t conform to the culture around us, but are transformed by the Lord.  We sang about Jesus being our HERO, and also about how we LOVE God’s Word.  I am hopeful that together this year we will impact each of our students for the Kingdom.  May this be a wonderful year!

From the Principal's Desk . . .

Throughout the year, in chapels, classrooms, hallways, the gym and playground, we have encouraged our students to live out the calling that Jesus has on their lives.  We’ve encouraged them to live for Jesus, to put others first, to shift their thinking in ways that Jesus calls them to.  And now, it’s time to release them for the summer - to live out their life in a different place, but in the same way!  My prayer, as we release them tomorrow, and as we release our graduates, is that they would follow the path marked out by God for their lives!

It’s amazing that we are just a week away from completion of this school year! Wow.  It has been a wonderful year, with great things happening here at CLA.  I’ve been challenging our students in the past couple chapels to take what they have been learning at school this year, and go into “all the world” (you know, like the pool, and the baseball field, and the park) this summer… and see this as an opportunity to share Jesus, to “make disciples,” to be an example of the love and truth of Jesus.  I hope that as your family transitions into summertime, that you do the same- find ways to be Jesus to a hurting world, to live out the Great Commission every day.

In our staff devotions and prayer time, we have reflected on some passages in I Peter 3 and 4.  It is such a joy to meet daily with others who are taking very seriously the job and ministry of sharing Jesus with our children.  As we approach the end of our school year, here’s a reminder from I Peter 4:7-8. “The end of all things is near.  Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray.  Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.”  May the Lord speak to us, and show us what it means to love each other deeply!

Standardized Testing next week . . .

Annually, CLA administers standardized tests to all of our K-9 students.  We don’t focus on the test as much as seeing the progress and grade level equivalencies for our students.  It also gives us a good idea what areas of focus we should have to make sure the students are receiving the best instruction possible.  During the test week, we remind families to make sure that students get adequate sleep and a good breakfast!

Reading in Romans 8 this morning, I was reminded of several very important concepts, which are helping me today…. We are more than conquerors (of trouble that comes our way) because God is FOR US.  Remember to rest in His promises for you today.  Remember to seek and follow the path that God has for you.  I am so glad to be on this journey of Christian education with all of you!

Standardized Testing first week in May . . .

Annually, CLA administers standardized tests to all of our K-9 students.  We don’t focus on the test as much as seeing the progress and grade level equivalencies for our students.  It also gives us a good idea what areas of focus we should have to make sure the students are receiving the best instruction possible.  K students do one test - language/reading (the GRADE).  1st-4th grade students take both the GRADE and a math test (GMADE).  5th-9th graders take a battery of tests covering multiple different subject matters (Stanford 10).  During the test week, we remind families to make sure that students get adequate sleep and a good breakfast!

From the Principal's Desk

What is your purpose? I have been thinking about this, and the recent reminder from I Peter 3:18 of Jesus’s purpose - “to bring us to God,” resonated with me.  If we are to be like Jesus, then we also want to create ways for those around us to be brought to God!  I pray that more may know the Lord through what we do at CLA!

CLA’s Easter Program . . . in just a few days: Tuesday, April 11

Just a friendly reminder that next Tuesday, April 11th, is CLA's Easter program!  This is a two part event, starting with the Road to Resurrection and ending with our community worship time at 7:00pm. The Road to Resurrection is open to all of our school families, but is being put on by the 5th-9th grade students. The Road will consist of 5 important moments of Jesus' life and will take about an hour to go through. After you are done going through the Road to Resurrection, there will be refreshments in the cafeteria as well as a photo stop.

  • To sign up for a time to go through the Road to Resurrection or to bring supplies, please check out the SignUp Genius link below.

www.signupgenius.com/go/4090448aaaa2ca2fa7-road1

  • 5th-9th grade students should plan on staying after school to set up for the Road to Resurrection and either bring something to eat for dinner or $3 to pitch it for pizza.  Be sure to bring any clothes you wish to change into for the event!  Students are responsible for set up of the rooms prior to the Road and for tear down after the community worship service is over.
  • K-4th grade students are welcome to attend the Road to Resurrection!  If you choose not to go throught the Road to Resurrection, students will need to be here no later than 6:45pm.  Students will need to have dress clothes for the program- no jeans, t shirts, shirts with writing or graphics on them.

Scholastic Book Fair Open Today through April 12 . . .

Our annual Scholastic Book Fair begins today!  This is a great opportunity to get books for your family and help our school get books for the classrooms and library!  In the last several years, our school has earned an average of $500 credit for books from each fair!  Books are available for purchase in the school lobby beginning today through Wednesday, April 12th.  Books can also be purchased while families are here for the Easter program on the 11th.

  • New this year is an option to shop online! Simply go to www.scholastic.com/bf/cla and shop from there.  All books ordered will be shipped for free to the school and should arrive by April 26th.

If you have any questions, please contact Miss Angela at the school or Lauren Gibson at pianogal39@gmail.com.  Thank you for your support of CLA through our Book Fair!

Christ died, once for all, and rose again - so that we may have new LIFE!  The celebration of Easter is my favorite - because it is the whole basis of our new life as Christians… May you each reflect on this truth once again this upcoming Easter season.  We are excited to share this time with our CLA community!

EASTER PROGRAM -- APRIL 11 -- "ROAD TO RESURRECTION!"

On Tuesday, April 11th, CLA will be having its annual Easter program!  This year, families will get to experience the Road to Resurrection- an interactive walk-through of 5 stations that reflect powerful moments in Jesus' life.  Groups of 15-20 will be led by a destination guide to each station, and overall it will take between 50-60 minutes to complete.  After you are done, please visit the cafeteria for refreshments or take your children outside for some family play time prior to our community worship service at 7 p.m.

In order to make this evening a success, we need YOUR help!  We need an adult volunteer to oversee the refreshment station in the cafeteria, a photographer, and several people who would be willing to contribute some cookies/treats! If you are willing to help, please email Mrs. Stribling at astribling@clacademy.org and let her know what you would be willing to do!

Today, along with several others, I walked the building to do some investigation of our HVAC in the building.  As we got to talking of the details of heating and cooling, we discussed the long range future plans for our school.  There was activity in the building - classrooms were in action, students walked past us in the hallway and smiled or waved, and the sights and sounds of school were all around.  I was taken back to a time nearly ten years ago when I walked the building, with empty classrooms, empty offices, and silence.  How great is our God, who has brought us this far?  Beyond our imagination!  Thank you, Lord, for what YOU have done in our school.  May we continue to walk in your ways as long as you sit fit for our school to minister!

5th-8th grade students- most of you will be staying after school on Tuesday 4/11 to transform the classrooms into stations!  Please bring clothes to change into for the Easter program. :)

As always, if you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Stribling!

From the Principal's Desk . . .

Wow! How exciting it has been to visit with prospective families during our three Open House nights.  God continues to send families to CLA that are committed to the best for their children’s education!  Praise the Lord for the community He is building here, and continue to pray for families that are making decisions about the future… including each of you reading this message!  Blessings to you as we work side-by-side for the Lord.

In Christ,

Mr. Horning
